Sailing with Star Clippers

Cruising, but not as you know it! Our Senior Sales and Product Manager, Alex Taylor, recently embarked on cruise with Star Clippers, sailing from Venice to Corfu on luxury tall ship. Here, she tells us all about it.

Ahoy, fellow travellers!

I was recently fortunate enough to be invited by Star Clippers to experience a cruise aboard the stunning Star Flyer, a four-masted sailing ship that whisked me away on an unforgettable journey from the historic canals of Venice to the sun-kissed shores of Corfu. This wasn't just a cruise; it was an adventure under sail, a step back in time with all the modern comforts.

We started our adventure with a day of exploring the magical city of Venice, its canals and historic streets enchanting us before we even stepped foot on the ship. Later in the afternoon we were greeted with a warm welcome from the crew, and the experience of setting sail down Venice's Grand Canal was an unforgettable beginning to our trip.

The first port of call was the charming island of Cres, a Croatian gem known for its rugged landscapes, tranquil coves, narrow streets and vibrant harbour. We spent the afternoon exploring the medieval town and soaking in the serene atmosphere.

Next, we sailed to Hvar, known for its beautiful beaches and lively atmosphere. The town itself is easily walkable, with a beautiful waterfront promenade. We browsed the local shops before enjoying an ice-cold local beer at one of the many waterfront cafes.

Our journey continued to the historic city of Dubrovnik where when sailing with Star Clippers allows for a truly unique and convenient experience, as the ship's anchoring location provides an unparalleled advantage. Unlike most large cruise ships that dock at Gruž Port, a 20-minute drive away, the Star Flyer anchors just off the coast of Dubrovnik's Old Town. This means you are "right there," with the iconic city walls and terracotta rooftops forming a breathtaking backdrop to your arrival. After exploring the city we enjoyed a chilled beer at Dubrovnik Beer Factory, where they brew their own local beers.

Next on the itinerary was Kotor. Waking up before dawn on the Star Flyer was a decision I will never regret. As the first light of day began to paint the sky, I made my way to the deck, eager to witness what I had heard so much about: the sail into Kotor. The experience was nothing short of magical. The ship glided silently into the Bay of Kotor, a dramatic, fjord-like inlet surrounded by towering, dark mountains. The air was cool and still, and the water was as calm as a mirror, reflecting the deep blues and purples of the pre-sunrise sky. As the sun crested the peaks, it cast a golden-orange glow that slowly illuminated the rugged landscape. The sight of the ancient, walled town of Kotor nestled at the foot of these mountains was breathtaking. Its stone walls snaked up the steep hillside, a testament to centuries of history.

Our next day was a blissful day at sea, a welcome opportunity to slow down and truly embrace the rhythm of life on Star Flyer. It was the perfect time to relax and take full advantage of the ship's wonderful facilities. With two pools and an abundance of sun loungers and shaded areas, there was no shortage of perfect spots to settle in for the day. I spent my time lost in a good book, occasionally looking up to take in the endless, mesmerizing expanse of the sea.

For those seeking ultimate tranquillity, the onboard massage services provided the perfect escape. I chose to treat myself to a relaxing massage, a truly rejuvenating experience that melted away all my stress. The gentle rocking of the ship and the warm sea breeze created the ideal atmosphere for unwinding.

In the evenings the onboard activities kept us entertained. We enjoyed a fun-filled Trivia night, laughed our hearts out during Karaoke, and danced the night away at the spectacular White Party, complete with a dazzling light show. One of the most magical experiences was spending a night sleeping on the deck under a blanket of stars, waking up to a truly incredible sunrise over the sea.

The food was another highlight of the cruise. Breakfast and lunch were served buffet-style, offering a wide variety of delicious options. For dinner, the menu changed daily, providing a new culinary experience each night. And for those nights when the daily menu didn't quite catch our fancy, there was always the reliable and delicious daily pasta special or a perfectly cooked sirloin steak and chips.

Star Clippers operates three impressive ships: the Star Clipper, the Star Flyer, and the majestic five-masted Royal Clipper. Each one offers a distinct and intimate sailing experience, making your choice of itinerary all the more exciting.
